Uber, in collaboration with Chinese tech company WeRide, has launched a self-driving taxi service in Abu Dhabi, marking Uber’s first international venture into autonomous transportation. The service enables customers to book self-driving cars from various operators directly through Uber’s app.

    Revolutionizing Transportation in Abu Dhabi

Starting this month, Uber users in Abu Dhabi can select WeRide’s self-driving vehicles for their trips. Fares for these rides will align with the pricing of UberX and Uber Comfort services. For added safety, vehicles will initially include backup drivers, with plans for fully autonomous cars to roll out by 2025.

The partnership between Uber and WeRide, announced in September, aims to solidify Abu Dhabi’s position as a hub for technological innovation in transportation. WeRide, known for its expertise in self-driving systems, already holds licenses to operate autonomous vehicles in the UAE, Singapore, China, and the United States.

    Building on WeRide’s Experience

WeRide’s self-driving vehicles have been operational in Abu Dhabi since July 2023, available through the TXAI app. This followed regulatory approval for testing and deployment on public roads. Beyond taxis, WeRide is advancing autonomous technology for minibuses and commercial transport equipment.

    Expanding Uber’s Global Vision

Uber’s collaboration with WeRide is part of its broader strategy, initiated in 2020, to become a global leader in autonomous mobility. Uber’s growing partner network includes companies like Cruise, Waymo, Motional, and Avride, as well as delivery operators such as Serve, Cartken, and Nuro.

WeRide also aims to list its shares on the U.S. stock market, targeting a valuation of $5 billion, although the IPO has been postponed due to regulatory procedures.

This joint venture reflects a significant leap toward sustainable and innovative urban mobility, positioning Abu Dhabi as a leader in autonomous transportation technology.
